Residency at Kelli Lundberg Art
From March to June 2024, I had the chance to be the first artist-in-residence at Kelli Lundberg Art. It was a huge period of growth for me as an emerging artist.
Instead of the quiet of a private studio, I worked daily in the gallery’s stockroom, right in the middle of a busy arts precinct. The energy of visitors, the café next door, and the surrounding studios kept me inspired and constantly on my toes. As an introverted painter it was a big shift, but it pushed me to adapt, gain confidence, and stay focused. Over three months I created a collection of 14 paintings for my exhibition “Grounded” exhibited in June, all of which were painted from life right there in the gallery.
The residency gave me more than just studio time. Conversations with Kelli, director of the gallery were invaluable, offering insights into the art world and reminding me that I’m part of a wider creative community. Seeing the gallery’s day-to-day operations, getting immediate feedback from visitors, meeting locals and interstate travellers, and having support with writing and marketing all shaped the way I think about my practice.
Being the first artist-in-residence at Kelli Lundberg Art was an honour. The experience gave me new skills, connections, and inspiration that continue to influence my work today.
